The Welch Group – Overview

Founded in 1934 by brothers Gordon and Jim Welch from a small village in South Cambridgeshire, with one 3 ton Morris petrol driven truck, the Welch Group of Companies has seen many changes..

From a single depot in Foxton, Cambridgeshire, the company grew steadily to seven road haulage depots nationwide and the business diversified into related industries such as mobile crane hire, and car and truck franchises. From the outset The Welch Group business ethic has been, wherever possible, to own outright all its vehicles and property.

Over the years the number of transport depots has been reduced and Welch’s Transport now has depots in Stapleford in Cambridgeshire, Henlow in Bedfordshire, Witham in Essex and St Ives Cambridge, all offering a nationwide service for items ranging from a single pallet to maximum weight articulated vehicle loads. As well as a modern mixed fleet of general haulage vehicles, a more recent development has been the formation of a Contract Distribution Division supplying dedicated vehicles and drivers to customers to suit their individual needs.

During the latter part of the 1980s the need for a professionally operated commercial garage was identified, and a commercial garage was established in Stapleford to service the needs of local businesses ranging from owner-drivers to large fleet operators. The garage quickly grew with the introduction of car and commercial recovery, roadside assistance and 24-hour breakdown cover. A second workshop facility was opened in Peterborough in July 2006 to cope with the demand for a commercial garage that catered for all makes of truck and was available to all types of operator. As a parts distributor for MAN ERF vehicles, as well as a provider of a full range of services to vehicle operators both large and small, Welch’s Commercials has firmly established itself in the marketplace.

Mobile Crane Hire has been a feature of the group since the 1950s and the group now includes Welch's Specialist Movements, a specialist transport company with lorry mounted cranes, heavy forklifts and low loader trailers which compliment and add further strength to an already successful part of The Welch Group. Our Crane Hire Division now has the ability to offer bespoke solutions from complete factory removals to special movements of large, heavy or awkward items.

Welch Group Subaru/Isuzu forms our car franchise at our modern showroom in Stapleford, Cambridge. Apart from new car sales from the Subaru and Isuzu range, Welch Group Garages also offer a variety of good quality used cars as well as vehicle servicing and MOT testing for all makes of cars.
